Mothers need to know why breastfeeding is important and the implications of not breastfeeding for themselves and their baby. They also need to understand what will make breastfeeding most likely to succeed so an explanation of practices like skin-to-skin contact, why keeping baby close and baby-led feeding are important and how to hold and attach their baby effectively. They should also know about practices which may hinder their likelihood of success like offering infant formula or using teats and dummies whilst breastfeeding is being established. Making sure that written information and the From Bump to Breastfeeding DVD are given out and mothers encouraged to use them to develop their knowledge will help to reinforce what you are saying.
