The audit workshop focuses on the type of audit required to assess care against the Baby Friendly Initiative standards, and how this can be carried out and interpreted.
Background knowledge and practical skills
The Audit Workshop has been designed to help infant feeding advisors and other key workers to audit the care their facility provides for breastfeeding mothers and babies against the Baby Friendly Initiative standards. All aspects of the auditing process are considered and the audit tool developed by the Baby Friendly Initiative is used as an example to enable participants to explore issues of questionnaire design, sampling, interviewing, scoring, presentation and interpretation of results, and action planning to improve care and maintain progress. Participants will have lots of opportunity to practice using the Baby Friendly audit tool throughout the day.
Mastery of the use of the audit tool by key staff members will enable health-care providers to audit the care they provide, identify training needs, evaluate interventions and monitor progress.

Who is this course for?
Participants at the audit workshops are expected to have attended the three-day course in Breastfeeding Management (and provide a certificate of attendance), have a good understanding of how to provide effective care and support for breastfeeding mothers, but are not expected to have significant experience of audit. It is essential that participants have previously completed one of the following courses:
The UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative’s three-day course in breastfeeding management or the course in breastfeeding and lactation management for neonatal nurses. Or the two day course in Breastfeeding & Relationship Building.
