UNICEF Ambassador Ewan McGregor travelled to Bihar, India’s poorest state, where malnutrition during pregnancy contributes to one of the highest rates of newborn deaths in the country.
Ewan visited the special newborn care unit in Vaishali, which was set up by UNICEF to provide free, life-saving care for critically ill newborn babies like Munna, who was struggling for survival at only four weeks old.
Like most babies who are admitted to the centre, Munna and his mum Kalfodin are too poor to pay for a doctor so this centre represents his only hope of survival.
Born at a shockingly low birth weight and suffering from jaundice, Musken brought her baby to the centre in the hope that the doctors there could save his young life.
With only 12 beds the centre is always overcrowded. But without the specialist medical care the centre provides it is unlikely that any of the babies would live, but here they have at least an 80 per cent chance of survival.
UNICEF is providing life-saving care in newborn centres for babies like Munna across the world.
